Gladiator (DVD) Review
Winner of five Oscars, including Best Film and nominated for seven Gladiator is one of the best produced and directed films of his time. Reminiscent of Braveheart, Mel Gibson creates a world so seemingly realistic, you are taken back in time to the glory of Rome. The music, colorful costumes and complex sets combine to create the illusion that it is in fact a witness to the trials and vicissitudes of human existence at the beginning of the millennium of Rome.
The film opens with a sobering display of ancient equivalent of war of "shock and awe" as the Roman legions advance on a band of rebels resist periphery rule of Gaul. From the time of legion commanders signal attack, the fury of hell is unleashed as flaming arrows and iron bars beat a unified front of rebel fighters. The scene is more similar to Desert Storm as an ancient battlefield, illustrating visually omnipotence when incorporated into the Roman legions.
The central character in the film and take the opening battle is Maximus (Russell Crowe), a Roman general, loved by his men and admired throughout the empire by impeccable character. While visiting the battlefield, reveals aging Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) to Maximus his secret plan to appoint the general manager of Rome his death, being that restore the Senate to remove the dictatorship of the Caesars. Crowe is well in the role of the classical hero, but support troops who puts Gladiator in another dimension excellence of film.
